Marrying in Germany with Documents from Azerbaijan

By Irada Abbasova, generally authorised translator and sworn interpreter for Azerbaijani and German
Updated on

To marry in Germany, you register your intended marriage with the Standesamt (registry office). Partners with Azerbaijani documents submit their certificates together with a certified translation. Under § 1309 BGB, foreign nationals generally need a certificate of no impediment (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis) from their home country or an exemption from it granted by the Oberlandesgericht (Higher Regional Court). If one partner does not speak sufficient German, the registry office usually requires an interpreter at the wedding ceremony.

Which documents does the registry office require?

You will receive the exact list from the registry office; it depends on your situation. Frequently required are:

  • Valid passport or identity card
  • Birth certificate
  • Certificate of registration (Meldebescheinigung)
  • Proof that any previous marriages have ended, e.g. a divorce judgment
  • Certificate of no impediment or exemption decision of the Higher Regional Court
  • Certified translations of all Azerbaijani documents

Why a certified translation?

German registry offices work with German-language documents. A translation bearing the certification statement, stamp and signature of an authorised translator confirms that it corresponds to the original. I translate birth certificates, divorce judgments and official certificates from Azerbaijani into German.

Interpreter at the wedding ceremony

If one of the partners does not speak sufficient German, the registry office usually requires an interpreter. As a sworn interpreter for Azerbaijani, I accompany wedding ceremonies at registry offices in Frankfurt am Main and the surrounding area.

Legalisation or apostille?

Whether Azerbaijani documents need to be legalised or bear an apostille is decided by the registry office. Ask when you register, before requesting documents from Azerbaijan.

Frequently asked questions

When should I arrange the translations?

As soon as the registry office has given you the list of documents. Then you will know exactly which documents need to be translated.

Can you also interpret at the wedding ceremony?

Yes. Tell me the date, time and registry office, and I will confirm my availability.

Is a translation produced in Azerbaijan sufficient?

German registry offices usually require a translation by a translator authorised in Germany. If in doubt, ask the registry office.
