Converting a Driving Licence from Azerbaijan in Germany

Updated on

Azerbaijan is not part of the EU. If you live permanently in Germany with an Azerbaijani driving licence, you must have it converted in order to continue driving. The responsible body is the Fahrerlaubnisbehörde (driving licence authority) at your place of residence. As the licence is not issued in German or English, a translation is required.

Which documents do I need?

Driving licence authorities usually list:

  • Application for a driving licence
  • Original foreign driving licence
  • Translation of the driving licence
  • Biometric passport photo and identity document
  • Eye test certificate
  • Proof of first aid training

Do I have to take tests?

Whether a theory and practical test is required depends, under § 31 and Annex 11 of the Fahrerlaubnis-Verordnung, on the country that issued the licence. Your driving licence authority can tell you the current rules for Azerbaijan.

The translation

As an authorised translator, I translate Azerbaijani driving licences with my stamp and signature. Simply send me a photo or scan of the front and back.

Frequently asked questions

How long may I drive in Germany with my Azerbaijani driving licence?

Once you establish your normal residence in Germany, deadlines under the Fahrerlaubnis-Verordnung apply. The driving licence authority will tell you the exact deadline and any possible extensions.

Is a photo of the driving licence enough for the translation?

For the translation, a clearly legible scan or photo of the front and back is sufficient. You present the original to the authority.
